i got a new camera recently and have been trying to find time to learn to use it. i gave li my old one so i could play for a bit yesterday. here is the black and white setting. i have no photo editing software so what i see is what i get--but i kind of like that: reminds me of the limitations of film cameras.

i agree with you, i'm not a fan of a lot of "post production" -- cropping everything, changing all the colors... though i will say i am happy to be able to fix the exposure when i have a great photo that's a little too dark.
should you decide you want some photo editing software, the GIMP is free (akin to expensive photoshop)... there's a learning curve to make it do the more complicated stuff, but the simpler things aren't so hard. or, picasa is really friendly and also free.
congrats on the new camera; i love this shot...
