baby bird woes

here is a newborn cardinal and several siblings in the nest. alas, he/she is no more. the nest was found toppled, a wing on the ground, and little feathers scattered about. and one egg on the ground which inspired me to do some research. it's pretty tricky to incubate a bird egg--the temp. must remain within a constant and narrow range. those eggs are pretty smart really, better not to hatch at all than hatch with no mama/papa around! and, i learned of the very high baby bird mortality rates. i found an odd comfort in that--as if maybe it was too much to expect two batches of cardinals to survive in one season. and soon after i did see a trio of carolina wren babies in the maple so that lifted my spirits. here is one of them:

springtime

this is a bit belated, but i want to remember one of our most enjoyable springtime activities during our copious amounts of backyard time while the pleasant weather lasted: baby bird rearing. a cardinal nest was built in one of our nandina bushes (see liam peering up at the empty nest) and one baby was cared for by a trio of one mama and 2 males. they parented in flurry of activity--constantly flapping from here to there, noisily chirping--either directed to the baby or to distract predators from the nest. once the baby started moving around a bit, i would suddenly hear all this chirping and know they were back in the yard--it was fun to figure out where the baby was this time. in contrast, the mourning dove would spend long periods of time just sitting quietly next to her fluffy, soft-feathered baby on the maple tree or telephone wire.

other fun activities: picking the many kinds of flowers and observing insects. liam played with this green bug for such a long time.

labor thoughts for kristy

our dear friend, kristy, is in labor today. a few weeks ago, eight women friends got henna on our hands, linking us to the henna on kristy's belly. the henna has now almost faded, as you may see in the second photo. i am sending warm thoughts for a lovely home birth. also, including a photo of my two home-birthed babes with the candle--sending energy, love, and light!

mothers' day

we had a really lovely mother's day--breakfast from my favorite bakery, a card from liam, a visit from gigi, a nice picnic lunch on the front yard with just li and bill while fi napped. later we hiked bull creek and then went out for dinner at a favorite mexican restaurant. it was simply so nice to spend a whole day together in such pleasant company--couldn't ask for anything better!

speaking of climbing

speaking of climbing, fi loves to climb this slide and stand at the top. the first time she did it, i was across the yard and i remember trying to smoothly yet quickly get over there before, as in my mind, she toppled off of her precarious position to the ground a few feet below. she is a good climber and careful so i always am going back and forth between letting her learn through taking risks and wanting to "spot" her. see, even in these photos, i can't resist holding on to her dress...

up and up

just last night, i was feeling thankful that fi could not climb the chairs that li uses around the kitchen to wash hands and help with baking. she must have picked up on those thoughts floating around the house because this morning (around the painfully early, not-had-coffee-yet hour of 7:30) she climbed the chair at the sink, took a break to run around on top of the train table and fall off once, and then was up on the other chair in the kitchen next to the stove and mixer. can i go back to bed?

cake is good

i've started asking li to occupy himself quietly while i nurse fi down for her nap. a couple of weeks ago, i left him to play with trucks and playdough. he comes in the room, asking for leftover chocolate cake. i say yes, he can have it when i get up, thinking we'll split it. we go over this several times and then he leaves the room. then, i hear him opening the plastic container from the restaurant, helping himself to a fork while i continue to lull fi to sleep.

a few minutes later, he reappears with crumbs and frosting smears all around his mouth and he gingerly climbs on the futon next to me, keeping his sticky sweet hands in fists to prevent dirtying the sheets. "mama, i don't know where that cake is, i didn't see it." i suppress a laugh and ask what is all that chocolate on his face? he thinks a second and says, "well, that was there from all day". ha!

above is what i found after fi dozed off. i love the incompleteness of their attempts at deception at age 3.5; he has no thought of hiding the evidence, for example. perhaps this will be less amusing when he is older...

light at the end

i feel we are coming out of a long tunnel this past year or so. and finally, we are coming to enjoy more moments like this one, where, as li said, "mama, fi and me are happily eating pretzels and sitting together". and this lasted for *minutes, not seconds, so i got to sit and eat some chips and salsa--fairly uninterrupted! it may seem like a small thing, but quiet moments are rare and precious around here.

after a few clingy days (possibly due to molars coming in), fi spent much of today practicing her walking. just walking around and around--so pleased to have this new freedom.
li has been spending increasing chunks of the day in his imaginative world. i try to stay out of the way and let it flow. his scenarios usually involve animal or people figures combined with trucks.

chatting with li

these photos capture what li is often doing through the day--talking to me in a stream of consciousness style about what is going on--usually involving which animal he is at that moment and what it is doing. it is bemusing to me since i am a fairly quiet person--where did this engaging, talkative creature come from?

also, i want to remember his pale, floating, never-been-cut hair.

inside the egg

on tuesday, li was a very hungry caterpillar inside his egg waiting to hatch. i found this amusing to see him 'fitting' inside his egg; but this also reminded me of what i remember of childhood: the total absorption in imaginative play. i love seeing what unfolds from his mind each day.

she walks!

about a week ago fi started taking a few steps headed towards one of us. over the past few days she has been steadily practicing on her own. i look up from some task and enjoy seeing her just trying again and again--there she goes unsteadily down the hall, across the living room or backyard.

language

i want to record all that fi has been saying so far--she's had a burst of words lately (only counting the ones she uses repeatedly and in context--of course at this point some of these only sound like approximations of the actual word): mama, dada, hot, apple, no-no, up, fish, all done, thank you, baby, hi, bite (she thinks it is funny to bite me recently).

she does signs for: more, light, fish, all done, flower.

i really need to teach her something for milk other than uunnhh!!!

yesterday b. came in from the garden and said "hi" and fi said, "hi dada". cute.

soak it up

we've been spending a lot of time outdoors lately--enjoying the lovely, mosquito-free weather. this time is so fleeting i am soaking up as much as i can before it becomes unbearable to be out. i dread the mosquitoes more than the heat!
fi loves the swing lately and earnestly asks for it. but once she is up there she sees the sand box and then declares her preference for that instead!

new camera

i got a new camera recently and have been trying to find time to learn to use it. i gave li my old one so i could play for a bit yesterday. here is the black and white setting. i have no photo editing software so what i see is what i get--but i kind of like that: reminds me of the limitations of film cameras.

remains of the day

we went to a surprise b-day celebration for A. today. brought home some tidbits to share. so much chocolate...so good...my favorites were the mole sauce, the florentines, the german chocolate cake, the raspberry dark chocolate with polkadots on top, the cocoa chai tea, the guinness brownie, the orange walnut brownie, i could go on!

teeny tiny freckles

i love these teeny tiny freckles that have appeared in the last few months. i have really wanted to take a photo of them but i only got one (one!) before he scampered off. i like this one though.

Sending vibes to S.

our friend is in labor now with her second baby. our strong circle of women friends has candles lit and are sending love and support to her now. it's work, but you can do it! open...

fi kept saying, "ooh, ooh, ooh, hot, hot, hot!" upon seeing her cake and candle.

it seems this is the day to begin the blog. happy birthday Fi!

we celebrated her birthday and GiGi's yesterday with cupcakes made by me and Li. lentil soup and spinach salad. roses from our yard.
